A friend posted something I wrote yesterday on his wall and tagged me. The discussion that developed is typical. A kind-of-liberal guy fully-satisfied that this strike is about money and pensions and that they teachers have to learn how to negotiate and sacrifice decided to speak his common sense: the teachers need to shut up and concede. The guy appears completely unaware of the fact a motivated and well-funded political machine running against the teachers’ platform, that has been gaining momentum over the last thirty years, that intends to radically reform public education. We can talk about what that reform looks like, I guess, after all that’s where things get political and ideological and pedagogical, but what’s not up for debate are the facts. This guy tried all the tricks. He began by citing right wing government watchdogs barking mad and ended with a whimper resorting to a story on NPR.
