dagWeek in Review: Tumblr Relevant

dagseoul:

Tumblr Relevance (TR) is the measure of a kind of highly-structured public discourse in which participants perform concern about a subject bloggers think should be relevant even though they might not fully understand how it effects their everyday lives. TR is measured in reblogs.

When bloggers feel the urge to strongly agree with something other bloggers strongly disagree with—when a blogger agrees with others’ disagreement, that is—a reblog serves to speak for them in protest and in support. What might at first appear to be simplistic “liking” of a subject actually has many rules, the first of which is to know which blogger’s reblog of a popular post to publish. Who is reblogged is often as important as the subject of the original post. Rules about revising tags, titles, content, as well as what sort of original content is appropriate all function to permit (re)bloggers to self-identify their social status to others.

TR is closely related to social justice discourse, which is marked by both its loud discourse about (in)equality-in-general and its failure to do anything about it.
